A pickup at KLIA, a run to Malacca, a full day of meetings around the city. Every so often a booking sums up why people choose a private car over everything else, and a family transfer we ran earlier this month did exactly that. Here is how the day went, roughly as the family described it back to us afterwards. ## The Booking Five travellers: two parents, three children aged four, nine and twelve. Six large suitcases plus hand luggage and a folded pushchair. Starting point was a condominium in Mont Kiara, ending point a hotel near Orchard Road in Singapore. They had originally looked at the express coach. On paper it works: the fare is low, the coaches are comfortable enough, and they run frequently. What stopped them was the checkpoint. On a coach, everyone gets off at immigration, walks through the hall with their bags, clears the counter, then finds the coach again on the other side. Twice, once for each country. With a four-year-old and six suitcases, that stops being a small inconvenience. So they messaged us on a Tuesday asking whether a private car could do the whole thing in one go. It can, and that is more or less the entire point of the service. We quoted an MPV rather than a sedan, because six large cases plus a pushchair does not fit into a saloon boot no matter how optimistic you are about it. The fare was fixed and all-inclusive: fuel, tolls on both sides, and the crossing itself. ## Before Departure Two things needed sorting before travel day, and both are the usual culprits when a cross-border trip goes wrong. The first was the Malaysia Digital Arrival Card. The second was the Singapore Arrival Card, which has to be submitted within a set window before arrival rather than weeks ahead. We sent them a short message a few days out listing what to complete and when, along with a reminder about passport validity, which needs at least six months remaining. ![Vehicle lanes at the Woodlands Causeway checkpoint](/images/content/wide-view-of-the-johor-singapore-causeway-checkpoi.webp) > **The most common cross-border mistake** > > People assume the arrival cards can be filled in at the border. They cannot, reliably, and mobile data at a busy checkpoint is not something to depend on. Do both before you leave the house. We also agreed a departure time. They wanted to arrive in Singapore in the late afternoon, and we recommended leaving Mont Kiara at 7am. That looks early for a five-hour drive, but it puts you past Seremban before the worst of the morning traffic and gets you to the checkpoint outside the evening rush. ## The Journey Pickup was at the condominium lobby at 6:55am. Our chauffeur had the plate registered with building management the day before, which sounds like a small thing until you have watched a car sit at a barrier for ten minutes while a guard makes phone calls. The drive south follows the PLUS Expressway, and we built in one proper R&R stop about two hours in. On a long drive with children, that stop is not optional. On a different day, or with a destination in Jurong, the call would have gone the other way. That decision gets made on the day based on how the traffic is actually moving, not fixed at booking. ## At the Border This is the part people ask about most, so it is worth being specific. The vehicle joins the car lane rather than the coach lane. At the Malaysian checkpoint the driver pulls up at the booth, everyone hands over their passports through the window, and the officer processes them. Nobody gets out. The same happens again a few minutes later on the Singapore side. There are occasions when an officer asks a passenger to step out briefly, and that does happen from time to time. But the default is that you stay seated, with your luggage in the boot behind you, and the whole thing takes a fraction of the time a pedestrian clearance would. The family’s own summary was that the children barely registered that they had crossed a border. ## Arrival They were dropped at the hotel entrance on Orchard Road in the late afternoon, with the same six suitcases in the same boot they had been loaded into that morning. Leave earlier than feels necessary. The drive is four to five hours before checkpoint time, and Friday evenings, weekends, and public holidays are the busiest windows at both crossings. Size the vehicle to your luggage, not your head count. Five people fit in most cars. Five people plus six suitcases do not. Sort the arrival cards at home. It takes ten minutes on a laptop and removes the single most common source of border stress.
